The design of the vortex throttle discharge control is based on the fluid mechanical principle of an enhanced vortex, which enables throttle discharge without moving parts.

The ACO Q-Brake vortex throttle uses the upstream water column and empties to generate a "vortex throttle" within the structure. The ACO Q-Brake vortex throttle is mounted with a built-in bypass door that can be opened in the event of a blockage, allowing the water to drain.

A stainless steel cable on the bypass door is used to control the bypass door. If the water level drops below the aperture, the float closes the bypass door and the original operating state is restored.
